Steve Gorn, is creating a new idiom, a music
that combines the essence of Classical Indian tradition with a
Contemporary World Music sensibility.
A power house performer each time and every time. Steve, has taken
the Bansuri to new heights, with his heart warming, recent
performances with the 'Born into Brothels Ensemble'. Few Westerners
can play Indian Classical Music with the kind of depth and clarity
that Steve Gorn does. A master bansuri player, Steve and his
ensemble have created a collection of Ragas, which are both rich
with tradition and unique in a special way. Melodies from Steve's
bansuris flow like the Ganges River flows out of the Himalayas ....

Although Steve Gorn and Benjy
Wertheimer had not yet met, they'd been hearing about each
other for nearly 20 years. Finally, in January of 2001,
Krishna Das invited them both to Los Angeles to record on
his CD, "Breath of the Heart." During breaks in the
recording schedule, they instantly began to play together.
Music without words ... esraj and flute weaving the melodic
contours of a raga ... flute and tabla meeting in a
spontaneous rhythmic dance. It was clearly the beginning of
a deep and powerful musical relationship. Their bond and
mutual respect grew as they toured the Northwest in 2002-03,
and culminated with this exquisite recording of Indian
ragas, along with Priyagitah, an original piece for esraj
and clarinet. |

The inspiration for this album came through
a series of concerts we gave for healing and massage trainings
last year. We wanted to create an hour of soft music, which could
be used during bodywork sessions and support the process of deep
relaxation and inner healing. It was a great challenge to play
less music, allowing a space of simplicity and emptiness within
our melodies.
We choose
the name "Shanti-Shanti", which comes from the Sanskrit word for
peace and silence. It is an expression we often use when we are
stressed or nervous, reminding ourselves to relax, to take it easy
and connect with our inner peace and well being.
