Kutiyattam is the staging of Sanskrit plays in a traditional style. It takes up to 40 days to enact a full play in Kutiyattam. Tracing its origin to the temple dances of the 'Devadasis' [temple dancers], Odissi is full of grace and charm that is glorified by the performer. This dance form from Orissa diligently portrays the aesthetic charm of 'Abhinaya' [acting] and the brilliance of Nritta, [dance] in a way of its own. With majority of the themes from Jayadeva's 'Geeta Govinda', dominated by feelings of love and devotion, Odissi serves as the ideal abode for expressing them to the fullest.

Hailing from the village of Kuchelapuri or Kuchelapuram in the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh, the Kuchipudi dance has a history of nearly two millennia. Since its origin, it has remained a continuous and living dance tradition of Andhra Pradesh. Its genesis, like most Indian classical dances is associated with religions, and for a long time was presented only at temples, and that too only for annual festivals of certain temples in Andhra.

Literally interpreted, as the dance of Mohini, the celestial enchantress of Hindu Mythology, Mohiniyattam is the female classical solo dance of Kerala, India. Noted for its graceful and sensuous movements with no terse footwork, Mohiniyattam reminds one of the gentle swaying of the green paddy fields and coconut palms of the fairy landscape. Mohiniyattam is older than Kathakali. The first reference to Mohiniyattam is found in a 16th Century text.

The dance Satriya has its origin in the Island of Majuli, situated in the middle of the mighty Brahmaputra River in Assam. Majuli is one of the biggest riverine islands in the world. The name Satriya is derived from Satra the monastery of the Vaishnavite sect. Today, it is one of the popular classical dance forms of Assam, portraying the cultural and traditional essence of the Majuli Islanders.

Yakshagana hails from the coastal strip of Karnataka. It is the product of the Vaishnava Bhakti [devotion] movement. It evolved to popularise the teachings of religion to the common man, to whom the highly formalized and Vedic religion was out of bounds. At least 400 years old, it is actually a dance opera or a traditional theatre form combining dance, music, spoken word, costume, makeup and stage technique with a distinct style and form.

Kutiyattam, the 2000-year-old classical Sanskrit theatre of Kerala, India, was recently honored by the UNESCO as part of the World Heritage. Thullal, a 300-year-old art form, composed by Kunchan Nambiar, which continues to throb with vitality and vigor in the cultural history of Kerala, India. A solo performance combining dance, music, acting and narration, the performer here enacts all the characters in the story. Humor, satire and social criticism are the hallmarks of its art.
