a way of its own. With majority of the themes from Jayadeva's 'Geeta
Govinda', dominated by feelings of love and devotion, Odissi

Hailing from the village
of Kuchelapuri or Kuchelapuram in the Krishna District of Andhra
Pradesh, the Kuchipudi dance has a history of nearly two
millennia. Since its origin, it has remained a continuous and
living dance tradition of Andhra Pradesh. Its genesis, like most
Indian classical dances is associated with religions, and for a
long time was presented only at temples, and that too only for
annual festivals of certain temples in Andhra. |

swaying of the green paddy fields and coconut palms of the fairy
landscape. Mohiniyattam is older than Kathakali. The first
reference to Mohiniyattam is found in a 16th Century text. |

origin in the Island of Majuli, situated in the middle of the
mighty Brahmaputra River in Assam. Majuli is one of the biggest

the popular classical dance forms of Assam, portraying the
cultural and traditional essence of the Majuli Islanders. |

Yakshagana hails from the
coastal strip of Karnataka. It is the product of the Vaishnava
Bhakti [devotion] movement. It evolved to popularise the

formalized and Vedic religion was out of bounds. At least 400
years old, it is actually a dance opera or a traditional theatre
form combining dance, music, spoken word, costume, makeup and
stage technique with a distinct style and form. |

art form, composed by Kunchan Nambiar, which continues to throb

its art. The most mundane subjects are presented steeped in
